A joint police operation in North Shore led to drivers being issued 36 distracted driving tickets in just 90 minutes.
Between 4 pm and 5:30 pm, police officers issued 36 distracted driving tickets and 15 tickets related to other Motor Vehicle Act infractions.
Officers from North Vancouver RCMP and West Vancouver Police joined forces on Friday, March 6, as part of a ICBC-led distracted driving enforcement project.
Signs were posted in high traffic areas at Capilano Rd/Marine Dr, in North Vancouver, and Taylor Way/Marine Dr, in West Vancouver.
Both signs clearly stated a warning, to stay off the phone, as police were ahead.
Officers then observed vehicles near the intersections specifically looking for drivers who were driving while distracted.
“For some reason, drivers still aren’t getting the message, that not focusing on the road while driving puts everyone at risk” says Cst. Kevin Goodmurphy, West Vancouver Police.
“We encourage everyone to leave distractions, such as cell phones, out of reach while driving.”
Distracted driving enforcement will continue throughout the month of March and beyond.
Should be done every day and the fines increased so that they are a real deterrent. It is so dangerous, especially for pedestrians.
I agree with you. Driving while distracted is extremely dangerous. I hope someday there will be fines for backseat drivers, too! Backseat driving is a another major source of traffic fatalities! I’ve ejected more than one backseat driver from my vehicle.
Excuse me, officer. Could you please issue a distracted driving ticket to my backseat driver?
Get rid of all electronic billboards and bus stop advertising that are electrically displaying a unnecessary advertisment! Visual pollution that is aimed at distracting a drivers attention from the road.
