Analyzing Traffic Safety Challenges at Lions Gate Bridge Intersection
The latest data by ICBC has revealed the dangerous intersections in West Vancouver, and Lions Gate Bridge tops the list with 143 crashes in 2022.
In the past five years, from 2018 to 2022, there have been 668 crashes at Lions Gate Bridge with 330 of those being casualty crashes, which are crashes that result in injury or fatality. Following Lions Gate Bridge for most number of crashes is Marine Drive and Taylor Way and turning lane (99 crashes), 15th Street and Marine Drive (80 crashes), and Marine Drive and Park Royal North and South (32 crashes).

A traffic intersection in North Vancouver also has the dubious distinction of being among the top crash intersections in the Province. There were 130 crashes at the intersection of Capilano Road and Marine Drive and Mathias Road and Turning Lane, according to the latest ICBC data.
Since June 1, West Vancouver police officers have taken 98 impaired drivers off the road through Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibitions. These also include seventeen, 24-hour prohibitions, thirty-seven, 3 & 7-day prohibitions, and forty-four 90-day driving prohibitions. That is up from 66 total driving prohibitions in the same period last year.
“Patrol teams are supplemented in the summer by extra officers conducting Counterattack Road Checks. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, please call Police immediately,” advises West Vancouver PD.
Speed, impaired driving and distracted driving remain the top reasons for crashes in BC. A survey commissioned by ICBC two years ago found an increase in self-reported phone use. The Ipsos Reid survey conducted in May 2021 found that almost all drivers (93 per cent) believe texting while driving is risky, yet 40 per cent admit they still use their phone at least one out of every 10 trips.
