RCMP warns of phoney peace officer scam in North Vancouver

North Vancouver RCMP received three reports of the scam between October 7 and 14.

North Vancouver RCMP is warning the public about a scam involving someone impersonating a peace officer and threatening legal consequences over supposed missed court appearances, according to a news release.

Between October 7 and 14, police received three reports of a caller claiming to be from the “Vancouver Sheriff’s Office.” The caller tells people they missed a court appearance and could be arrested or held in contempt of court if they do not act immediately. In one case the caller demanded cash, threatening jail time to pressure the recipient into paying, the release says.

Investigators have confirmed that neither the name nor the phone number used to contact the recipients is associated with the justice system. No financial losses have been reported in the cases brought to police attention.

“Scammers use fear and the threat of legal consequences to pressure people into making decisions without taking the time to verify what’s happening,” said Cst. Paul Reece of the North Vancouver RCMP. “If you receive a call like this, don’t rush into acting or making a payment. Contact the appropriate office directly using an official phone number to verify the information.”

Police advise residents not to be afraid to hang up or say no, and never to give out personal information such as their name, address, birthdate, Social Insurance Number or banking and credit card details. As the release puts it: if you didn’t initiate the call, you don’t know who you’re talking to.

Anyone who has been victimized should contact their local police. Scam attempts where no money was lost can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
