If you don’t have winter tires, it may be best to stay at home. Drivers in the Lower Mainland, Howe Sound and Vancouver Island are advised to avoid travel unless their vehicle is adequately equipped for winter weather.

The province said Sunday morning’s traffic tie-up on the Cut on Highway 1 in North Vancouver was due to people trying to travel without winter tires or chains. Westbound delays on The Cut between Mountain Hwy and Lynn Valley Road yesterday were due to multiple spun-out cars and a large commercial truck that had not put chains. Crews assisted several drivers and noted that many were not adequately equipped for the conditions.
The Ministry of Transportation’s maintenance contractor made 30 passes through the corridor yesterday to clear the roads but was obstructed by spun-out vehicles. “Colder winter weather will linger in the region for the remainder of the week. All drivers are reminded to use caution, avoid travelling in poor weather conditions when possible and prepare for delays,” the Province said in a statement.
While highway maintenance crews work to improve road conditions and reduce hazards, drivers are asked to leave space for these vehicles and move over safely when they see a vehicle with an amber light approaching. Drivers are also reminded that it’s unsafe to pass a snowplow on the right.
