A Vancouver man has been sentenced to 12½ months in jail after dragging and seriously injuring a BC Highway Patrol officer while fleeing a traffic stop in Delta.

Tobin Haas, identified by police as a 57-year-old Vancouver resident, also received an additional three-year driving prohibition and a two-year probation order on September 17, 2026, according to a press release from the BC Highway Patrol.
The incident happened just after 10:30 a.m. on February 17, 2024, on Highway 91 near 72 Avenue. An officer stopped a grey Nissan because its driver was suspected of having an outstanding arrest warrant. Haas was alone in the vehicle. When the officer asked for his driver’s licence and identification, Haas sped away, dragging the officer until he was able to disengage, police said.
On March 25, 2026, Haas pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm under the Criminal Code and driving while suspended under B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage and police radio recordings, obtained search warrants and took witness statements, including one from the injured officer, according to Sgt. Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol.
“If you get stopped by the police, do not make a bad day worse by fleeing the scene,” McLaughlin said. He urged drivers to contest charges through the court process rather than flee a police stop. The officer is still recovering from his injuries, police said.
